Why does scout gravitate toward calpurnia
Calpurnia is a colored lady who helps out in the Finch household. Scout like Calpurnia because she always seems to have time for Scout and listen to her. She also thinks of her as a faithful and beloved cook. Scout learns that Calpurnia is the one that taught Zeebo how to read, write etc. Calpurnia pulls scout in the kitchen and tells her that Walter is the guest and she should treat him with respect.
When Jem and Scout go to Calpurnia's church they realize that she has been living a double life. Her language and attitude changed when she was in her church. Jem and Scout were also surprised to learn that Calpurnia was one of the only people in her church who could read.
Being able to read shows that you are educated. Most black people can't read, but Calpurnia can. It affects Scout because Calpurnia is the one who taught Scout to read. Calpurnia's fault was to teach Scout how to read and write.
